A small-group Duomo tour and dome climb

City Wonders and AF Tours give you about 30 minutes with a guide inside the cathedral, then send you up the dome on your slot. Book the first tour of the morning and guests say you get the nave almost to yourselves before the day crowd arrives.

Small-Group Duomo Tour and Dome Climb

About this experience

This is the short, honest version of a guided Duomo visit. A guide from City Wonders or AF Tours (one of the Opera's official partners for 2026) takes your group of up to 15 into the cathedral for about half an hour. Then you're handed off to the dome entrance and climb on your own. Reviewers say it plainly: "only stay with them for 30 minutes".

What makes it worth booking is the clock. The early slots get you inside before the doors open to everyone else, and two reviewers say they had 10 to 15 minutes in a near-empty nave. The 3-day pass then covers the bell tower, baptistery and Duomo Museum, not guided. At $90 it's the cheapest tour on this site with a live guide, about $55 more than the 30 EUR official pass on the Opera's price page.

One trap: the listing's web address mentions a terrace view, but the inclusions don't list the terraces. You won't walk the roof on this one; for that, book the Dome & Terraces tour. And 4 of 66 reviews are one star, so read the meeting instructions twice: the guide stands on the steps beside the Misericordia museum, facing the bell tower.

  • The cheapest dome tour here with a live guide
  • Early-morning slots inside before the crowds
  • Groups of 15 at most, or a semi-private option of 10
  • 3-day pass for the bell tower, baptistery and museum
  • Free cancellation up to 24 hours before

What guests say

★★★★★

Let's start off by saying, that the time my wife and I chose to do the tour was the perfect time(early morning) because we got the opportunity to enter the church before anyone else. So beautiful inside! our tour guide gave us information for about 30 minutes and sent us on our workout to climb up to the top of the dome. [...] Very manageable as long as you pace yourself.

We had the first tour of the morning booked and were lucky enough to have about 10-15 minutes inside before the hoards started coming through. [...] The climb is 463 steep steps and when you get half way and think you're done you've still got a bit to go. [...] I am 56 years old and relatively unfit and still managed the climb.

Book the earliest tour and you'll be inside with no other visitors. Start working out before you come.

Awesome work of art. Great if you book early get in with tour guide but only stay with them for 30 minutes rest of time on your own. Climb isn't fir those not physically fit or claustrapobic. If able to do the climb is well worth it with amazing views 360°.

Tips before you book

  • Book the earliest slot of the day. Every happy review says the same thing.
  • Arrive 15 minutes early. One guest arrived late off a delayed train, and staff waited, but don't count on it.
  • Use the bell tower ticket the same afternoon or the next morning at 8:15.
  • The cathedral dress code is strict: shoulders and knees covered, or you may be refused.
  • The dome closes 16 to 20 November 2026. Pick other dates.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the guided part of the small-group Duomo tour?

About 30 minutes inside the cathedral. After that you climb the dome on your own; the dome part is listed at about an hour.

Does the small-group tour include the Duomo terraces?

No. The page address mentions a terrace view, but the inclusions list only the cathedral, the dome climb and the 3-day pass. For the terraces, see our terraces guide.

Can young children join?

The listing prices children from 4 to 12, and the Opera sets no minimum age for the dome, but 463 narrow steps are a lot for a 4-year-old. Read the dome with kids first.

Where exactly is the meeting point?

At the top of the steps beside the entrance of the Museo della Misericordia, Piazza del Duomo 19/20, facing Giotto's Bell Tower. The rep holds a sign with both City Wonders and AF Tours on it.
