Booking choice: The dome ticket with 3-day pass, from $75 per person. Check dates Tour details
The dome lets a fixed number of people up per time slot, and in spring and summer the official calendar fills weeks ahead. When it does, the Opera does not release more: its FAQ says online availability is definitive, and the ticket office has nothing extra.
There are still three ways up on a sold-out day: a tour or ticket from an authorised partner with its own slots, a slot that opens on a different time or day, or the bell tower next door. Here is how each works, and where people get burned.
The quick answer
A grey 0 means that slot is gone on the official site, and the ticket office can't help. Check other times and the next day first. Then look at tours from the Opera's authorised partners, which hold their own slots: from $75 for a ticket only to $90-$146 with a guide. Ticket resellers carry real risks, so check reviews and keep your phone on. If all else fails, climb Giotto's Bell Tower: 414 steps, €20, and the dome in your view.

What does a grey "0" on the official calendar mean?
That slot is sold out on tickets.duomo.firenze.it. Other times on the same day may still be open; blue slots are the ones you can book.
The Opera's calendar shows each dome time slot with the number of places left. Blue means bookable; a grey "0" means none. A date can look open while the slot you clicked is full, so scroll the whole day. The FAQ is clear that what you see online is all there is: no tickets are kept back for the ticket office at Piazza San Giovanni 7.
Look at late weekday slots before you give up. Mornings, especially the 8:15, sell first. Sundays and holidays run only from 12:45 to 16:30, so they fill faster than weekdays.
Do sold-out dome tickets come back?
Rarely. Official passes can't be cancelled or refunded, so there is no stream of returns.
Since tickets are named and non-refundable, someone who can't come simply loses theirs. Nothing goes back into the pool. That is why refreshing the official calendar for days, which works for some museums, seldom pays off here.
Better uses of your time: check the slots one or two days either side of your plan, since the pass gives you three days for the rest of the complex anyway. Avoid the 16 to 20 November 2026 maintenance closure, when there are no dome slots at all. And if you are in Florence for a while, a winter weekday is often bookable a few days out.

How can a tour have dome slots when the official site is sold out?
Authorised partners buy slots from the Opera in advance and hold them for their customers. You pay for that hold, plus whatever the tour adds.
The Opera names its 2026 partners in its FAQ, including AF Tours, Tourify Tours, Walkabout Tours, Walks Agency, Tiqets and Trip.com. Several of the tours on this site are run by them. Their allocations are why a dome tour can show availability on a day when the official calendar is grey.
Cheapest first, the options on this site that include the climb:
| Option | From | What comes with the slot |
|---|---|---|
| Dome ticket with 3-day pass | $75 | Ticket only, handed over or texted by staff |
| Dome ticket with audio guide | $78 | Ticket and two audio-guide apps; non-refundable |
| Small-group Duomo tour | $90 | 30 min guided inside, early slots |
| Dome and terraces tour | $92 | Guided cathedral, terraces option |
| Dome and museum tour | $136 | Museum guided, guide on the climb (guests report) |
| Guided dome climb | $146 | Guide on the climb |
| Evening dome tour | $224 | After hours, private terraces |
| Private walk with dome climb | $300 | Private guide through the centre |
A held slot is not a promise of every date. Tours sell out too, and the same week that fills the official calendar fills theirs. Book as soon as you find one.
A reserved dome slot and the three-day pass for the bell tower, baptistery and museum, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
Check dates for the dome ticket with 3-day passAre dome ticket resellers safe?
Some are authorised and mostly fine; the risk is in the handover. The Opera can refuse tickets bought from unauthorised sellers.
The Opera's terms say tickets bought from unauthorised third parties can be refused at the entrance. Stick to partners the Opera lists. The dome ticket with 3-day pass on this site comes from Tourify Tours, which is on that 2026 list.
Even with a listed partner, a ticket-only booking has more ways to go wrong than a tour. The ticket reaches you through staff on the square or a message, not as a pass in your inbox. Among the reviews of that listing are two 1-star complaints: one guest got no dome ticket in the final week, another had the booking cancelled at the meeting point. A third, in October 2026, found nobody at the pickup. Against that, guests who got through report it worked well:
- "They texted me the tickets the day before our scheduled entry to climb the dome and worked out great! I had just missed buying them directly from the site [...]"
- "We received our tickets the day before with clear instructions on where to go and what to do. [...] We booked this because the Duomo official site was sold out."
How to cut the risk: send the passport names they ask for straight away (the pass is named), keep WhatsApp on, and confirm the pickup point the day before. If nothing has arrived 24 hours out, chase it while free cancellation still applies.
Is a guided tour safer than a ticket-only reseller?
Usually, yes. A guide meets you with the tickets and walks you in, so there is no handover to miss. It costs from $15 more.
The cheapest guided option, the small-group Duomo tour at $90, is only $15 more than the ticket alone. You get 30 minutes with a guide in the cathedral, then climb on your own. The dome and terraces tour at $92 is the most reviewed tour on this site and adds the roof terraces in one of its options.
With a guided tour the operator's guide holds the tickets and takes the group through the ID check together. Problems still happen; they are just rarer, and the guide is there to fix them. One guest on the small-group tour arrived 10 minutes late after a delayed train and wrote that the operator "went above and beyond to ensure that I didn't miss the climb to the top."

The cheapest guided way onto a sold-out dome: 30 minutes inside with a guide, then the climb, with early-morning slots.

Climb Giotto's Bell Tower. It is 414 steps, the Giotto Pass costs €20, and tickets are usually available a day ahead.
The tower stands beside the cathedral façade, and its top terrace looks straight at the dome. Many people prefer the photo from there. It is under restoration since March 2026 with scaffolding outside, but the stairs and the top stay open; it closes for maintenance from 9 to 13 November 2026. Compare the two climbs in dome or bell tower.
If you'd like a guide for the day, the David and bell tower tour is built for this: the Accademia with Michelangelo's David first, then the cathedral, the museum and the baptistery, with an optional bell tower climb.

No dome slot left? Michelangelo's David with a guide, then the bell tower and its view of the dome.
Check dates for the David and bell tower tourHow do you avoid a sold-out dome next time?
Book the moment your dates are fixed, start with the morning slots, and avoid Sundays and the November closure.
- Book early: from May to October, weeks ahead for a morning slot; in winter a few days is often enough.
- Book the dome first, then plan the rest of Florence around its fixed slot. The pass gives you three days for everything else.
- Avoid Sundays and holidays, when the dome opens only from 12:45 to 16:30.
- Check the closures: 16 to 20 November 2026 for the dome, 9 to 13 November for the tower. See the closure post.
- Want flexibility? The official pass is non-refundable. A tour with free cancellation up to 24 hours before lets you lock a slot early and still change your mind.
Frequently asked questions
Does the ticket office sell dome tickets when the website is sold out?
No. The Opera states that online availability is definitive and the ticket office at Piazza San Giovanni 7 has no extra places.
Can I use someone else's dome ticket?
No. The Brunelleschi Pass is named since March 2025, and staff check ID against it at the dome entrance.
Can I get a refund on an official dome ticket?
No. Official passes and dome slots can't be changed, cancelled or refunded. Tours on this site can be cancelled for a full refund up to 24 hours before, except the audio-guide ticket, which is non-refundable.
Is the bell tower a good alternative to the dome?
Yes. It is 414 steps with three landings, costs €20 on the Giotto Pass, and its top terrace looks straight at the dome.
