Brunelleschi's dome with a guide on the stairs

Walks in town sells one hour on the dome with a guide who climbs the 463 steps beside you, stopping on the landings to explain what you're looking at. It's the one listing built around the climb itself, not the cathedral below.

Brunelleschi's Dome Climb with a Guide

About this experience

Almost every dome product, the Opera's own official 50 EUR dome tour included, ends with "now climb on your own". This one doesn't. The inclusions name a local expert guide for Brunelleschi's Dome, and the only 5-star reviewer says the guide gave the group stops to catch their breath and explain details on the way up. If you're nervous about the stairs, or you just want the engineering explained where it happens, that's the point of it.

The rest is the standard Brunelleschi Pass: Giotto's Bell Tower, the Opera del Duomo Museum, the baptistery, the cathedral floor and Santa Reparata for three days, all self-guided. The tour lasts about an hour, groups are capped at 15, and you get headsets. At $146 it costs about four times the 30 EUR official pass on the Opera's price page.

The weak point is the track record: three reviews in total, one five-star and two four-star. One four-star guest says scheduling problems meant they climbed without the guide and got a partial refund. Treat "guide on the stairs" as the plan, not a guarantee, and check the confirmation for your slot.

  • A guide on the dome stairs, not just at the bottom
  • Stops on the way up to rest and hear the story
  • One focused hour, groups of 15 at most
  • 3-day pass for the bell tower, museum, baptistery and crypt
  • Free cancellation up to 24 hours before

Tips before you book

  • Confirm a day ahead that a guide is booked for your slot. One guest ended up climbing alone.
  • Bring ID. The dome checks it against the name on the ticket since March 2025.
  • Ignore the stroller tag on the listing: no stroller goes up the dome.
  • Pair it with the bell tower the next morning. You'll know exactly what you're looking at.
