Walkabout Florence Tours · Florence
Walkabout Florence Tours starts in the Opera del Duomo Museum, where the original Gates of Paradise and Brunelleschi's own tools are kept, then takes you through the cathedral and up the dome. It's one of the few tours where guests say the guide climbs the 463 steps with the group.

Walkabout is one of the Opera's own official partners for 2026, and this is its museum-first version of the dome climb. You spend about an hour in the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, the cathedral's museum behind the apse, where Ghiberti's original Gates of Paradise, Michelangelo's Bandini Pietà and the wooden models of the dome and lantern sit. Seeing those first changes the climb: you know what you're walking through.
Then come 30 minutes in the cathedral and about an hour for the dome. The listing calls the dome part an admission, but reviews tell a better story. Guests report the guide climbs with them, keeps the group together on the narrow stairs and talks about the Last Judgment fresco from the walkway, close enough to see the brushwork on Vasari and Zuccari's 3,600 square metres.
The catch is time and age. At 2.5 hours, plus the climb, it's long for small legs, and the youngest ticket is 8. Late starts end after the museum and baptistery close, so guests suggest an earlier slot if you want to use the pass the same day. And the price, $136, is about four times the 30 EUR official pass: you pay for the guide, the museum hour and someone on the stairs.
In front of the Lindt chocolate shop at Piazza del Duomo 15R, on the south side of the square. Short stops follow at the baptistery, the bell tower and the Loggia del Bigallo.
The original Gates of Paradise, the old facade reconstruction, Michelangelo's late Pietà and the tools and models used to build the dome.
The nave, the inlaid floor and the story of the 1418 competition Brunelleschi won.
463 steps: up through the walls, along the walkway under the fresco, between the two shells and out onto the lantern terrace.
Giotto's Bell Tower and the baptistery on your own with the same ticket.
★★★★★We had a great tour with Becky. She was extremely knowledgeable and we had a great climb with her. She made sure that no one in the group got lost during the climb and made the experience as seamless as possible.
★★★★★Firstly we walked over to the muesum and Alexandria was so knowledgeable about renaissance and pointed out the differences between be late gothic and early renaissance doors that were the original that were on Il Duomo. We then proceeded to the dome to climb . This was a fabulous experience. [...]
★★★★★We had a wonderful tour guide, Vincenzo Neri. He was very knowledgeable and gave so much history and context which really allowed you to appreciate the Duomo fully. [...] Fair warning though it is 463 stairs to the top. Definitely got a great workout in lol.
★★★★★It was an excellent way to learn about the history of the art, dome and Renaissance! [...] These attractions were closed by the time we finished the Dome climb, but we did get a great sunset view. If planning a visit to the Baptistry choose an earlier ticket time for the tour, or save time the next day.

Guests report yes: reviewers describe the guide climbing with the group and keeping everyone together on the stairs. That is rare. On most tours, including the official 50 EUR dome tour, you climb alone.
The originals moved inside from the cathedral complex: Ghiberti's Gates of Paradise, Donatello's Penitent Magdalene, Michelangelo's Bandini Pietà and the models and tools from the building of the dome. The tour spends about an hour there.
8. The listing prices youths from 8 to 17, and anyone under 18 has to climb with an adult. For younger children see the dome with kids.
